The Traveling Aspie

December 30, 2018January 6, 2019 / Russell James / 2 Comments

Welcome to my new blog. My previous blog was a hodge-podge of different topics, mostly relating to mental health and sometimes I wrote about traveling. There were some really good posts on that blog and I'm proud of what it accomplished. I haven't written for The River's Bend in several months and I realized it was … Continue reading The Traveling Aspie

Like a lot of undiagnosed autism kids, I grew up being abused in all manner of ways. When I was very small I attached myself to Luke Skywalker and the rest of Star Wars (but especially Luke). It was my first special interest. It was also the first piece of my mask. See, not only did those movies provide me an escape from the childhood I was given, they also provided me with something I could talk about with other kids, then teenagers, and now adults. It kept me from more abuse when I got to school. The mask is such a double-edged lightsaber. . . Luke Skywalker rescued me as much as he did anyone else in those movies and I’m #forevergrateful for it. I know I’m not the only person with this story, either. You may think it’s silly that a grown man would have such emotional feelings for a movie franchise, but you would be stupid. When you’re autistic and being abused, sometimes your special interests are what raise you. . . I always thought Luke would have been my friend, and that helped me see myself in just enough light to make it. . . One of the places that pulled me to the PNW was @olympic_nps Its one of my favorite places on the planet. Now, as the rains have finally arrived, I am impatient for the spring to come so I can go exploring that amazing and remote-feeling outpost. I’ve had some real life-changing experiences there, I can’t wait to dig in. Touring WA regularly in 2020, so I’ll have plenty of opportunities. National Parks have long been a special interest of mine. . . . . . #actuallyautistic #autisticartist #differentnotless #autism #autismacceptance #aspergers #aspie #autismpride #neurodivergent #autismawareness #sensoryprocessingdisorder #optoutside #rei1440project #takeahike #california #adventureawaits #neverstopexploring #findyourpark #keepitwild #wildernessculture #natureaddict #stayandwander #keepitwild #theoutbound #outdoorfolk #hiking #rivers #getoutstayout #redinstead #yosemite
December mornings at our house. I’m not using cannabis for the week to reset my egregiously high tolerance, and I am SOOO sped up. It’s kinda driving me up the wall. Can’t sleep no matter what pills I take, I’m sweaty all the time, can’t regulate my temperature. Of course, this could also be a result of this horrible diet my dr put me on. Either way, days full of medication aren’t fun. . . . . #redinstead #asdtools #autismtools #actuallyautistic #autismpride #autismlife #autismrocks #differentnotless #takeoffthemask #disabilityawareness #realshit #beauthentic #autismacceptance #autismblog #autismawareness #autismwarrior #autismloves #neurodiverse #meltdown #neurodiversity #abaisabuse #ableism #onthespectrum #aspie #aspergers #aspielife #autistic #autismsociety #sensoryprocessingdisorder #asd
Yosemite earlier this fall. Right now this is covered in snow, I imagine. I am ready to start adventuring again, playing music on tour and visiting parks, both national and ball ⚾️. I mentioned yesterday that touring has brought me out of my shell and teaches me resilience. Soon I’ll post an IGTV video about what it’s like. Not today. I need sleep and recovery today. . . . . . #actuallyautistic #autisticartist #differentnotless #autism #autismacceptance #aspergers #aspie #autismpride #neurodivergent #autismawareness #sensoryprocessingdisorder #optoutside #rei1440project #takeahike #california #adventureawaits #neverstopexploring #findyourpark #keepitwild #wildernessculture #natureaddict #stayandwander #keepitwild #theoutbound #outdoorfolk #hiking #rivers #getoutstayout #redinstead #yosemite
